Advanced radiotherapy
in an engaged environment

Since 2018, we have been working with Isala Zwolle on their long-term housing plan (LTHP). By 2035, all departments currently housed in various ancillary buildings must be united in the existing 80,000-m2 main building. The day treatment centre and Radiotherapy Department, where radiation therapy takes place, will be separated from the main building in order to optimize the care processes.

First new building

Isala enables high-precision radiation therapy for head tumors, eliminating the need for surgery in many cases. On the cutting edge of healthcare evolutions, Wiegerinck designed a building to accommodate the new, advanced Gamma Knife radiation machine. This is first new building that has been constructed according to the master plan. It is accessible via the main building and connects to the existing structure in a logical, fluid and attractive way.

Light and serene

The undulating, wood-lattice facade fits in seamlessly with the anthroposophical, organic forms of the main building. Patients, who often arrive feeling vulnerable, insecure and anxious, experience light and serenity as they approach the radiation building via the spacious patios on either side. Once inside, windows and skylights provide a connection to the outdoors—even in the patient rooms, where patients are fixed to a head frame for radiation therapy. Everywhere in the building, the atmosphere is reassuring and soothing. From the very beginning of the project, our goal was to achieve the right balance between connection, privacy and medical requirements, and this can be felt throughout the building.
