Wiegerinck was commissioned by AxionContinu to design a residential building for psychogeriatric patients in the De Veemarkt urban district outside of Utrecht.
The building consists of seven residential groups for psychogeriatric patients, as well as a Grand Café for residents and the general public alike. In addition to unity and tranquility, the architecture seeks nuance and differentiation. The large windows of the street-facing living rooms can be easily distinguished from the those of residents’ private rooms.
The position of the communal areas was chosen in such a way that the individual rooms are divided into two clusters, each with four sitting/sleeping rooms. On the smallest scale, there are cosy nooks and seating areas that invite residents to discover and relax.
